Single
serve brewers make it possible for thousands of people to function at normal
capacity in the mornings. That morning cup of coffee is a lifeline for many,
and without it, their whole morning would suffer! And while brewers work hard for
you every day, hard water deposits and coffee grinds can escape into the
machine before landing in your cup of coffee, so it’s to your benefit that you clean
your machine fairly often to keep it working well and making great coffee.
To make sure that your single serve brewer keeps working for you, there are a few techniques you can use. The most popular and useful one is also extremely easy, and requires only a few household items.
Grab a toothbrush, some pure white vinegar, some dish soap and a dish brush or cloth. A few pieces of your machine, like the funnel, lids and drip trays can be put in your dishwasher’s top rack or soaked in a mixture of soap and hot water in the sink. The actual unit is what you need the listed materials for.
After removing all these parts, use the cloth to wipe the inside of the machine, and the brush to loosen any chunks of coffee that are stuck to the inside. If there are any hard water deposits or stubborn pieces stuck in there, dip the toothbrush in the vinegar and scrub away. If you’ve neglected your single serve brewer for a while, you may need to soak those parts in a vinegar-water mixture for a few minutes to loosen the buildup.
After that, reassemble the machine with the parts that were in the sink or dishwasher, and you have only one more step - the vinegar brew. In order to make sure the piping and insides of the machine are free of old lime scale buildup that can ruin your cup of coffee, pour some vinegar into the reservoir and brew several cups of vinegar water. When you start getting a cup that’s just water and the vinegar has run out, rinse out the reservoir. No vinegar smell means no vinegar left, and that means you’re in the clear.
This cleaning method takes less than 20 minutes and makes sure not only that your cup of coffee tastes great, but that your single serve brewer uses less energy than it would have if it was dirty. So drop your favourite cup, disc or ground coffee into your single serve brewer and taste a cup of coffee that’s as pure as when you first purchased the machine!
